RPI, with help of RSEi, hosted a successful and energetic Change the World Innovation Weekend on March 14–15, bringing together approximately 170 students for a fast-paced, first-of-its-kind innovation challenge through the Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship. Over the course of just 30 hours, student teams researched problems, developed concepts, and pitched their ideas to judges. Entries were evaluated on criteria including feasibility, global impact, marketing, and overall presentation, challenging students to balance creativity with real-world practicality. The weekend also featured keynote speakers and mentors who shared insights on topics ranging from pitch development to provisional patent filing, giving participants valuable exposure to the entrepreneurial process.

Among the students making a mark was RSEi member Zoe Puno, who received the Tech Transfer Award at the Severino Center Innovation Showcase for her project on 3D Printed Luminaires. Her work builds on intellectual property developed by Dr. Nadarajah Narendran, Indika Perera, and Jean Paul Freyssinier at RPI’s Lighting Research Center, translating university research into real-world applications and exploring commercialization opportunities. Zoe’s recognition highlights the innovative spirit and practical impact of student projects showcased during the weekend.

We especially want to recognize student organizers Seth Kozak and Zoe Puno; competitors Garrett Gagnon and Paul Lea; and volunteers Anthony McMahon, Katya Pisuk, and Junning Sun for their involvement in helping make the event such a success. Support from alumni and the broader community added to the weekend’s impact. Eric Stoever ’04 and Dave Hall ’80 volunteered as student coaches and judges alongside other members of the Capital Region business community, helping mentor participants and evaluate final presentations.
