Who Are We?

  • The revitalized RSEi is a modern alternative to traditional “Greek life”: a trifecta of student self-governance, living-learning-collaboration, and personal/professional development empowering members to pursue their many interests alongside like-minded peers beyond the classroom.
  • Though much has changed, our 150+ year mission has not: support the development of well-rounded, successful leaders in science, technology, architecture and business. Our core values remain the same: Leadership & Teamwork, Innovation, and Social Responsibility
  • We believe the stereotypical fraternity model no longer provides the value-added experience current students desire. The historic model has resulted in occurrences of unacceptable conduct and suspensions by RPI. The RSE Alumni and the new student leaders are endeavoring to take RSEi in a more modern direction to benefit students, alumni and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Our History

  • The Rensselaer Society of Engineers (RSE) was founded in 1866 by RPI students seeking a new kind of academic and social organization. Originally named the Pi Eta Scientific Society, it emphasized scientific discussion, inclusivity, and strong personal and professional bonds among members. In 1883, the group changed its name to distinguish itself from fraternities and strengthen its identity with RPI. As RSE grew, it occupied various rented spaces in Troy until shifting student housing trends led to the 1923 construction of its current clubhouse near campus, funded largely by philanthropist John M. Lockhart. Designed by renowned architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, the house became a central hub for student life. Post–World War II, RSE flourished alongside campus expansion, maintaining its legacy as both a scholarly and social community deeply tied to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
